The changes in climate require action and the municipalities are responsible for implementing climate measures on a local level. In the Municipality of Herning we take this task seriously which have helped us achiving the title of EcoCity.

We plan

The Municipality of Herning has drawn up an ambitious and comprehensive climate plan with mapping, scenarios, targets and an action plan. By carrying out our plan we get an efficient reduction of greenhouse gases. We are at the cutting edge of developments and statutory requirements. We can target our efforts and benefit from synergy using municipality planning.

We create new knowledge

The Municipality of Herning supports and cooperates with a number of participants on hydrogen development projects. From development and research at Aarhus University’s Institute of Business and Technology in Herning, to the Hydrogen Innovation & Research Centre (HIRC), hydrogen for transportation (H2 Hub), hydrogen city (H2PIA) and hydrogen heated passive building (H2College).

We involve our businesses and citizens

The Municipality of Herning has a long history of cooperation, partnerships and the participation of businesses and citizens. ”Climate Network Herning” with 35 local participants has played a part in developing our climate plan and cooperates with us on many climate and energy projects. Local ownership strengthens a joint effort. A lot more projects and activities are initiated and external funding has been attracted.

We act

Due to ongoing efforts throughout the past 25 years, the municipality has reduced its CO2 emission from the heat and energy supply. We have therefore halved the CO2 emission per citizen compared to Denmark as a whole. Our target is to reach 100% RE (renewable energy) in the heat and energy supply by 2030.

We benefit the climate and Herning

We increase the reliability of supply and” selfsufficiency” of energy by targeting our efforts to promote RE technologies, research and industrial development within the municipality. A leading position within hydrogen technology provides market benefits and interest from abroad and we can attract further research and external funding. Cooperation across trade groups and across sectors provides great synergy. All to the benefit of the climate and Herning!
